Weather halts play in Mallorca

Golf Betting Lines

10/25/2007 - Mallorca, Spain (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Thursday's first round of the Mallorca Classic was halted by thunderstorms and play at Pula Golf Club was eventually suspended for the day.

The first round will resume Friday morning with the second round to follow.

Andrew McLardy and Gary Murphy both opened with rounds of four-under-par 66 to share the top spot on the leaderboard. They were joined there by Richard Finch, who is minus-four through six holes.

Englishmen Graeme Storm and James Hepworth both posted 67s and are among seven players tied for third. Joakim Backstrom also posted minus-three.

Those three were joined there by four players -- Luis Claverie, Emanuele Canonica, defending champion Niclas Fasth and Sam Little -- who are all in the middle of their opening rounds.

McLardy started on the back nine Thursday and parred his first 11 holes. He caught fire on the front nine with three straight birdies from the par-four third.

The 33-year-old McLardy moved to minus-four with a birdie on the par-four seventh. He parred his final two holes. McLardy needs a solid finish to move into the top 60 on the Order of Merit and gain entry into next week's Volvo Masters.

"This is my 'mulligan' because I should have sealed my Volvo Masters place last week in Portugal," said McLardy, who tied for 60th last week. "I only needed 25th place, but shot a 76 in the final round and fell away. Today I started hitting the ball close, that gave me confidence and then I started putting well."

Murphy also started his round on the 10th tee. He picked up his first birdie on the 11th, before running off seven consecutive pars.

Around the turn, Murphy birdied the first to move to two-under. He poured in back-to-back birdie putts from the third to grab a share of the lead. Murphy parred his last five holes to remain tied for the lead.

Finch also started on the 10th, but had more success on that side than his fellow leaders did. He opened with three straight birdies from the 10th. The Englishman birdied the 14th to grab a piece of the lead before play was stopped for the day.

Sergio Garcia, who hasn't finished outside the top two in the last three years here, opened with a two-under-par 68. He shares 11th with Alastair Forsyth and Jyoti Randhawa, while six more players are at minus-two in the middle of their opening rounds.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
