Bulldogs try to douse Flames

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/29/2007 - Indianapolis, IN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Illinois-Chicago Flames hope to halt a four-game losing skid tonight, but doing so against Horizon League powerhouse Butler seems highly unlikely.

Illinois-Chicago has been limited to fewer than 60 points in three consecutive outings, including Saturday's 60-55 home loss to Cleveland State. The Flames are a disappointing 4-5 in league play, and only two of their 10 true road games have resulted in victory this season.

Butler is a perfect 9-0 at home, and the team has lost just twice in 21 outings this season. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs are currently riding a five- game winning streak that includes Saturday's 68-58 decision over Detroit. They are undoubtedly eager for revenge tonight, as their only Horizon League loss came against these UIC Flames back on January 10th by a score of 73-67 in overtime. Still, Butler owns a 21-11 lead in the all-time series between the two teams.

Jovan Stefanov put up big numbers for Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, as he racked up 23 points and 11 rebounds in the loss to Cleveland State. It should be pointed out, however, that Stefanov shot just 7-of-23 from the floor. The only other double-digit scorer in the loss was Othyus Jeffers, as he racked up 17 points and 15 rebounds. Still, he connected on only 5-of-16 field goal attempts, contributing to the team's 26.7 percent shooting, including 2-of-12 from three-point range. UIC did earn a 55-37 rebounding advantage in the clash and limited Cleveland State to 33.3 percent overall shooting, but those positives were not enough to offset the negatives. Jeffers is averaging 15.9 ppg and 8.7 rpg this season, and he is clearly one of the top players in the league.

A.J. Graves has led Butler in scoring in three straight games, and he is currently averaging a team-high 18.8 ppg. Although his 39.9 percent shooting from the floor could certainly stand some improvement, Graves is a 97 percent shooter from the foul line and hits the three-pointer fairly consistently. Mike Green is contributing 13.2 ppg for the Bulldogs, and Brandon Crone is netting 10.4 ppg. The fact that the top three scorers for Butler are all shooting below 40 percent from the field is surprising, especially considering the team's tremendous success. Strong defense has obviously been the major key to that success, as the Bulldogs are holding foes to 56.2 ppg on 40.1 percent shooting. Four players scored in double figures for Butler in the win over Detroit just two days ago. Graves tallied 15 points to lead the charge, and Green hit 11-of-12 free throws en route to 13 points. As for Crone and Pete Campbell, they scored 12 point apiece.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
