Attempting to keep pace, Jayhawks host Cyclones in Lawrence

02/24/2007 - Lawrence, KS (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The sixth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks return to the confines of the Allen Fieldhouse this weekend, as they play host to the Iowa State Cyclones in Big 12 action from Lawrence this evening.

The Jayhawks are tied with Texas A&M atop the Big 12 standings with an 11-2 record and will close out the regular season next week with a road trip to Oklahoma, followed by a home tilt with Texas. Kansas has won five straight games, including a 71-62 decision at rival Kansas State this week.

Iowa State is just looking to finish the season off strong. The Cyclones are just 5-8 in Big 12 play, but have won two of their last three games, including a 55-53 decision against Colorado on Wednesday.

The Jayhawks hold a huge advantage in the overall series with ISU (161-58) and have won three straight over the Cyclones, including a thrilling 68-64 overtime victory in Ames on January 13th.

It wasn't a pretty offensive game by either team, but in the end, Iowa State was able to edge out Colorado in Ames by two points. ISU shot just .368 from the floor in the game, but got 13 points from Corey McIntosh, 12 from Mike Taylor and 10 from Wesley Johnson in the narrow victory. Taylor also dished out five assists, but turned the ball over a whopping eight times in the game. That has certainly been a problem for the entire ISU squad this year, as the team is averaging nearly 15 miscues per contest. The team has also struggled with its shot (.409), resulting in a mere 64.0 ppg. Taylor leads the team with 16.5 ppg and 122 assists, but has plenty of holes in his game as well. He is shooting just .375 from the floor and his 148 turnovers this year are almost three times more than the next guy on the list. Johnson has been a solid presence in the paint, as the freshman is averaging 12.1 points and a team- high 8.3 rebounds per game. He gets help down low from center Jiri Hubalek (11.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg).

Kansas is getting it done in just about every facet of the game this year. The young Jayhawks are shooting .493 from the field, while averaging a healthy 78.6 ppg. The team is also outrebounding foes by a hefty 7.9 rpg and is limiting the opposition to just 60.0 ppg. Five players are averaging double figures, contributing to a deep scoring pool. Brandon Rush leads the way with 14.1 ppg and is the team's top long range threat (.405, 53-of-131). Julian Wright is a perfect complement with his interior game, adding 11.6 ppg, while grabbing 8.0 rpg. Mario Chalmers is next in the scoring department (11.4 ppg), followed by a pair of freshmen in Darrell Arthur (10.8 ppg) and Sherron Collins (10.0 ppg). Collins erupted for 20 points in leading the Jayhawks to the win in Manhattan this week. Kansas shot a solid 51 percent from the floor and placed three others in double figures in the win. Chalmers poured in 17 points, while Rush chimed in with 11 points. Arthur recorded a double- double in support, with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
